In my consulting work, one of the biggest frustrations is surrounding students' lack of perseverance in problem solving. Too often, our students want to just grab the numbers, find a key word to tell them what operation to do, and then answer the problem. However, there are so many ways we can explore problem solving with students that will unlock a positive math journey for all!

This workshop will focus on the 15 problem types that involve addition and subtraction situations, modeling the structure of the types, providing flexibility in the calculation of answers, and a plethora of ideas of how we can engage students in the problem solving experience. Together we can foster the development of curious, risk-taking, confident, and flexible mathematicians!

Here's what you can expect from this on-demand workshop:

  • 4.5 hours of videos exploring all course topics
  • PD Certificate honoring between 5 - 8 PD credit hours (depending on how many of the provided additional items are completed)
  • Closed Captioning for all videos
  • Customized workshop notebook to keep track of ideas that resonate, reflections, and record your action items
  •  Exploration and Modeling of the 15 problem types
  •  Sorting and Matching Activities for you and your students
  • Print Resources such as: a benchmark assessment to see where you need to begin working with students, a data file to organize your data, sorting and model matching activities for you and your students, fun story mats, and an additional 36 problems per problem type to use in small groups with students,
  • Padlet full of resources that include podcast episodes to listen to, online resources and websites for you and your students, charts of problem types, models, equations, learning trajectories, research articles, and videos as well.
  • An access code to a one -year classroom membership at https://www.brainingcamp.com/ and their amazing suite of online manipulatives including Cuisenaire rods!

Hi! I'm Ann Elise Record

I am a NH certified K-8 Educator as well as NH Elementary Math Specialist. I’ve been an educator for over 22 years in the roles of classroom teacher, K-5 Math Coach, adjunct faculty member for Plymouth State University, and currently a Bureau of Education and Research national presenter and an independent elementary math consultant providing training both in-person and virtually. I am a contributing author, together with Dr. Alison Mello, on Dr Nicki Newton’s book “Fluency Doesn’t Just Happen with Addition and Subtraction" and co-author of the upcoming "Fluency Doesn't Just Happen with Multiplication and Division."

My passion is working with educators to help them implement best practices within the three basic pillars of classroom math instruction that encourage growth mindset messages: math fact fluency, word problem structures, and understanding progressions of the standards. Together we can create engaged, curious, risk-taking, flexible and confident lifelong mathematicians!

"During the Summers of 2021 and 2022, Ann Elise was able to travel to Nebraska and provide in person training for our teachers. The survey responses from the participants often used the words "light-bulbs" but more importantly that word is typically followed by synonyms for relevant, life-changing and engaged. Ann Elise understands the needs of educators and knows how to tailor her training to ensure quality professional development for all. Ann Elise's ability to develop a strong connection with her participants allows her to push them in a way that they respond and makes them want to achieve more."
